City of Fort Macleod Recreational Cantilever Swimming Pool Cantilever

A cantilever structure is a piece of tensioned fabric supported by a steel frame, which is projected over an area from a set of posts positioned outside of the area. Cantilevers are ideal in applications where the supporting structure needs to be completely removed from the area being shaded such as the side of a swimming pool. These structures are permanent and require substantial footings to support the weight of the frame and fabric being cantilevered over the area being shaded. The fabric can easily be removed during the winter season or during a storm and is easy to reinstall when needed. Cantilevers are popular with swimming pools, waterparks and a variety of other sports and recreation applications.

Advantages

Unobtrusive Footings – Cantilever structures can be placed outside the area you would like to shade with the tensioned fabric protruding out from the footings. Posts are commonly positioned behind a fence or a seating area providing free-flowing movement underneath the tensioned fabric.

Design Flexibility – These structures are not limited to a flat design, the steel we use to construct the frame can be straight or curved and can also include a truss to create a roof-like shape. We can work with designers and architects to create a shade structure that looks perfect for your space.

Extendability – It is common for multiple cantilever structures to be chained together to create a larger shaded area. This is ideal for bench seating or the side of any sports pitch or swimming pool. This also allows for your shaded area to be extended at a later date.

All-Weather – We can design these structures to accommodate a variety of weather conditions and, depending on the fabric you use, they can stay up in almost all conditions.

Disadvantages

Size Limitations – Because the fabric and frame are only supported by posts on one side, this limits the amount of shade a cantilever structure can provide when compared to a framed or free-span structure. A common solution, as previously mentioned, is to chain multiple cantilevers together to provide more shade.

Substantial Footings – We engineer all structures to overcompensate for weather conditions and other types of load. Due to the force created by the frame and sail, footings for these structures are much more extensive than a framed structure and are more similar to those of a free-span structure.

Construction

  1. Marine-Grade Hardware – For outdoor products, high-quality hardware is essential for both the aesthetics and the longevity of your structure. All of our hardware is made from marine-grade forged 316 stainless steel imported from Denmark. High load rated, this material is extremely strong and corrosion-resistant ensuring a polished finish for the life of your hardware.
  2. Triple-Layered Reinforced Corners –  Our reinforced corners allow increased levels of tension, improving the aesthetic of the sail and its performance in wind and rain.
  3. Galvanized or Powder-Coated Steel – Frames come galvanized as standard and we also offer an upgrade to powder-coated, which can be used to match the colour of your branding or equipment.
  4. Double-Stitched Seams – Poorly constructed seams can lead to fraying and strain on a sail’s perimeter. We double stitch our seams with high-quality UV-stabilised thread ensuring a clean even look throughout the perimeter of your structure.
